My home was in need of a little something extra for the Halloween/Fall season. I wanted something fun and festive that wouldn’t cost much and that’s when I had the idea to make these cute little papier mache pumpkins. They’re super easy and super low cost! All you need is Paint, Newspaper, Tape and Flour!
This is a kid friendly Craft!
Materials:
Tape
Flour
Newspaper
Paint(I used Golden Acrylic because it’s what I had on hand, but anything will do)
Crumple newspaper into a ball. Keep crumpling newspaper around your ball until you reach your desired size.
Take a long strip of tape and cinch it around your newspaper ball like a trendy little pumpkin belt.
You want your newspaper to noticeable indent at the center where your tape strip is.
Repeat the tape cinching two more times so that your pumpkin will have six sections and your three pieces of tape cross at the top and bottom of your newspaper ball(like the stripes on a beach ball).
Roll up a piece of newspaper 2.5x longer than you want your pumpkin stem. Twist paper.
Fold stem in half and secure to top of pumpkin by folding the bottom of the raw edges out and applying tape.
Mix papier mache 3 parts water to one part flour. I used 1 cup of flour and 3 cups of water which made far more solution than I needed for my small pumpkin. It all depends on the size and number of pumpkins you are making. It’s easy to mix so you could start with less and make more. Tear leftover newspaper into strips.
Dip Newspaper Strips into papier mache solution and drape over pumpkin frame repeating until the entire pumpkin is covered.
After your pumpkin dries apply another coat of newspaper and allow to dry again. Then you’re ready to paint! Be creative! Have fun with it! and feel free to share your finished pumpkin on my facebook wall!
Hi! I haven’t done a paper mache item in a while – might give this a go! thanks for sharing.
I hadn’t done it in a while either, but it was very fun to get back into! I hope you have lots of luck!
